(We kid you not.)

A comical counterfeit Seated Liberty Dollar made from scrap metal that is far too light, has horribly mis-aligned clash marks, and sports Johnny Depp’s birth year. [Editor’s note: What the $%^&* was the manufacturer thinking?? And yet, this piece has passed hands more than once. Read on and see why this piece is nuttier than Captain Jack Sparrow.]

The only diagnostic necessary to determine this is phony. Needless to say, the Carson City Mint was not in operation in 1963, nor were Seated Liberty Dollars being minted at this time.

The reverese shows some amazing die clashes; however, the strangest part is that the most prominent one is actually rotated about 45 degrees compared to the obverse.

And, even after all of this ridiculousness, there is a clash of Liberty’s shield under the eagle’s beak that is impossible, as there is no way to rotate the obverse to impress this mark. This means that the dies must have clashed while misaligned by more than 25%.
