A common date Peace Dollar that is too light, was poorly tin plated with a nearly flat reverse strike.

The strike is horrid and inconsistent. On the reverse, “PEACE” has nearly disappeared, and the rest of the text is almost flat and unreadable.

The coin is made of steel (the dark gray), but plated in a thin layer of tin (the light gray), which rubs off very quickly in circulation. This in turn exposes the steel, which (being of low grade) quickly rusts, so look for rust spots (the brown spots).

Finally, the dies are improperly aligned by about 180 degrees (medal alignment). Put your index finger and thumb at 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock respectively and spin the coin and you shall see.
